My son's 2nd-3rd grade class was doing a unit on texture. The school my sons' attend has project based learning. His class was learning all about butterflies. I worked with the teachers to combine the two. The students first folded a 12 x 18" piece of paper into eight sections, then they went around the classroom finding all different types of textures; on shoes, book cases, the wall, notebooks, etc... They used a different color of the rainbow for each square, plus on black and one brown. The next class period we learned about analogous colors and the students had to paint each texture with a color next to it on the color wheel. I helped cut out the different types of butterflies out of the cardboard, the student drew the different color sections onto the pieces. The next class they used their texture/color sheets in groups to fill in the different color sections. They enjoyed working collaboratively and the butterflies turned out wonderfully!
